Why Detox?

Intro

Detox is a hot topic right now and just so happens to be one of my favourites! To detox or not to detox? That is the question. There’s a lot of conflicting info out there with some arguing that it’s not needed and others who are desperate to sell you a whole host of ‘liver cleansing’ remedies. So what’s the crack?

In all health disciplines throughout time, the association between toxicity and disease has been clearly defined and one of the oldest approaches to maximizing health …. is detox.  Its defined as the removal of toxic substances or toxins from the body. It sounds more scary than it is. The term ‘detox’ gets bad press but this is mainly due to the vast amount of money made from expensive plans and products which claim to remove toxins. But a lot of the time, they aren’t really necessary.

So what’s a toxin?

A toxin is any substance that creates irritation in the body, undermining our health. Unfortunately these days we are bombarded by more and more of them. There’s environmental pollution, plus there are toxins in food sources such as pesticides, plasticizers, additives and hormones in meats to name just a few. Within our bodies we have to ‘deal’ with these substances and it’s this increasing load that can put the body under pressure and create health problems. We are all unique both in terms of which toxins we react to and in our ability to clear them from our body. When your body is detoxing efficiently, you feel better. It’s that simple.

 

Detox with a Difference

With so many detox plans and products on the market, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Options range from short term juice cleanses to longer term gentle healthy eating plans…. it’s a minefield ! My 9-day detox is not a faddy diet. It’s principles are based on scientific fact. It’s more of a gentle cleanse. That’s not to say that the results are any less profound. The plan is all about good food and it aims to promote optimum nutrition through a healthy and nutritious eating plan. There is no restriction of macronutrients. This is a well-balanced plan full of whole, fresh and clean food bursting with nutrients to support the liver, digestive and immune systems and boost overall health. This is a detox with a difference. More of a ‘reboot’ or a ‘reset’ - expect to eat real and feel the difference in just 9 days!

Who stands to benefit? 

I strongly believe that we can all benefit from cleaning up our diet from time to time. We all tend to fall into bad habits, consume too much sugar and stimulants, drink too much booze, eat too much convenience foods etc… and before we know it, we’re feeling under par. This 9-day reboot can be used to either help you get back on track every few months or so or kick start a healthier routine for life. It can be particularly beneficial to those who lack energy, feel low, suffer from bloating, skin complaints, PMT, get aches and pains, have developed food sensitivities, suffer from bad breath or have a few pounds to lose.

So what’s the link between detox and weight loss? When the liver is overloaded, as it commonly is with the modern diet it cannot successfully eliminate everything its subjected to. Anything that cannot be eliminated or excreted is locked up in the fat stores where its kept safe. If we can therefore improve our ability to detoxify, we may improve our ability to eliminate and better manage our weight. Other common benefits include:
